Small changes in the New Year

By Karen DeMamiel

SUN JAN 12, 2025

This year, I have decided to take a more gradual approach to my goals for 2025. Instead of overwhelming myself with an extensive list of changes, I am focusing on integrating small, positive habits to enhance my overall health.

I've always been a sunset lover. When I was a photographer, I chased the sunset for those gorgeous golden hours, as we called them. Now, living on my little ranch, the sunset has become my favorite part of the day. Although the sunrise is blocked where I live, we have the most amazing sunsets. This is one of the reasons I named our place Golden Hill Ranch (our beloved golden retrievers were another reason).

Recently, I learned that red light therapy is very beneficial. I discovered that both sunrise and sunset provide red light therapy for free! So now, watching sunsets is not only a source of joy but also a way to improve my health. I encourage you to get outside during sunrise or sunset and let that beautiful, healing light touch your face.

. This flu season has been particularly tough. My son, who goes to public school, was sick over Christmas and again last week. To keep us healthy, I’m being proactive. Our lemon tree has blossomed beautifully, so I bought fresh ginger and turmeric to boost our immunity. I juiced a bunch of lemons, then kept the rind of one of the lemons. I then put the juice and the rinds in my blender and blended.

I started by chopping fresh ginger and turmeric, leaving the skins on for added flavor and nutrients ( and I was a tad lazy). After chopping, I combined the ginger and turmeric in my blender with freshly squeezed lemon juice. For the juice, I took a cheesecloth and carefully poured the blended mixture into it. I then gathered the corners of the cheesecloth and squeezed firmly to extract every last drop of liquid into a large mason jar.

I now keep the mixture in my fridge, and every morning, I take a shot of it as soon as I wake up. Alternatively, you could make ice cubes from the mixture and enjoy it with hot water in the morning; I have done that in the past. I hope these two tips are helpful as you start your 2025 year. Cheers, friend!
